The first edition of Health News You Can Use for 2016 focused on the mental health services and supports that community health centers provide. Experts discussed legislative and advocacy strategies to reinforce the mental health care system in Florida and provided an overview of the legislation proposed and expected for the upcoming 2016 Florida legislative session that affect mental health care or people with mental illnesses and substance use disorders.
Jeffrey Bowman, MBAHCM, is the Vice President and Chief Operations Officer of Community Health Centers, Inc. His nearly 20 years of health care experience includes diverse experiences in for profit and non-profit health care settings.This experience includes operational management at the departmental level as well as at the county-wide health care program level. Mr. Bowman completed his Master’s Degree in Business Administration and Health Care Management in 2004. With this blend of successful experience and knowledge, Mr. Bowman oversees the day to day operations of Community Health Centers, Inc. and is responsible for communicating the corporate vision and goals to consumers. A native of Pennsylvania and proud Pennsylvania State University alumni, Mr. Bowman values time with his family, enjoys acting, and is an avid sports enthusiast.
Laura Brennaman, PhD RN CEN, is the Policy and Research Director at Florida CHAIN. She studies state and national policies related to health care access and quality. Dr. Brennaman has explored access barriers and disparities of care for mental health services in Florida, publishing in nursing, mental health, and health policy journals. She has been a Robert Woods Johnson Foundation Nursing and Health Policy Collaborative Fellow at the University of New Mexico and is an American Academy of Nursing Jonas Foundation Health Policy Scholar. Dr. Brennaman holds a Doctor of Philosophy in nursing and health policy from the University of New Mexico, a Master of Science in Nursing Education from the University of New Mexico, and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from University of Kansas.
